University of Toronto
Almost exactly fifty years after the event, this unique symposium brings leading scholars, activists, and other notable personalities to Toronto from various continents to address the historical record and the legacy of the coup which toppled Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh’s government on August 19, 1953 – Mordad 28th, 1332, in the Iranian calendar. It brings to life and dissects one of the most important events in twentieth-century Iranian history, and throws light on the lessons Iranians and other nations can learn from those fateful times.
Historians, political scientists, legal experts and others will look at the ways in which Iranian history for the past fifty years has been affected by Mossadegh’s overthrow, and the impact of the coup not only on Iran’s political and economic development, but on U.S. foreign policy, the politics of the developing world and, more broadly, the conduct of international relations.
Books and posters will be available for sale.
